At Somerset Berkley, the advanced ceramics and metals students were making pieces as memorials for the children killed in the Sandy Hook shooting. Each of the students picked a child and made a piece that somehow illustrated their interests or personality. As I was photographing the process, it was clear to me how important this assignment was to each student. Everyone put a huge amount of time and effort, as well as emotion, into their pieces. The students worked diligently and efficiently, focusing on even minuscule details to make their piece the absolute best that it could be. Photographing this process was a lovely experience because I got to see people come together and channel their emotions into their memorials. By photographing the students creating their pieces, I hoped to document the physical process as well as the heartfelt passion that each student put into the pieces that they so beautifully created.
